Institute of Catalysis was founded in 1958 as a part of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The founder and first director of the Institute till 1984 was academician Georgii Konstantinovich Boreskov, an outstanding scientist in the field of catalysis and chemical engineering, a major organizer of science. In 1992 the Institute was named after him. Since 1995, the Institute is headed by Academician Valentin N. Parmon.

In 1980, for its contribution to international cooperation Institute awarded the international prize "Golden Mercury". In 1994, according to the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation Institute of Catalysis was given the status of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation.

Today G.K. Boreskov Institute of Catalysis has one of the largest research centers in the field of catalysis. The Institute has branches in. St. Petersburg and Volgograd. The staff of the Institute has about 1,000 people, including more than 350 scientists. Field of the Institute's work ranges from solving problems of a fundamental nature in the field of catalysis to the creation of new catalysts, catalytic technologies and pilot production of catalysts.

The main direction of scientific activity of the Institute is to establish the general physical and chemical laws of catalysis, the creation of the scientific foundations of molecular design of compounds and materials, the development of the theoretical foundations of the catalytic processes, the creation of a new generation of highly efficient catalysts for the basic chemical, refining and petrochemical industries, as well as the creation of catalysts and technologies for new applications. Fundamental research focuses primarily on issues of prediction of catalytic action, the development of the technological basis for the preparation and production of catalysts as well as for the development and optimization of catalytic processes.

Applied research in the Institute of Catalysis is carried out within the major federal programs of national importance and are aimed at solving specific problems of practical importance. The Institute is a permanent member of major international and Russian projects, has partnered with many companies and factories in Russia and abroad. The Institute created and developed more than 50 catalysts and catalytic technologies for various industries.
